Dr. Juan Carlos Gómez conducts research on the development of prelinguistic communication and early theories of mind in human infants and in great apes and monkeys. He also researches the abnormal development of these abilities in children with autism.

Other lines of work include the development of object manipulation and causal understanding in human and non-human primates, and the discussion of theoretical models and concepts about the interplay of evolution and development in the emergence of cognitive skills.
