I am interested in the development of sex differences in behaviour in mammals, specifically primates and rodents. My current focus is on the role of steroid hormones in the development of sex differences in behaviour and brain functioning in rodents. I also study primate behaviour, in particular sex-biased parental investment, adaptive birth sex ratios, food sharing and female mating strategies. I have critically evaluated evolutionary approaches to the study of human behaviour in a recent book, Sense and Nonsense: Evolutionary Perspectives on Human Behaviour (Laland & Brown, 2002; OUP).
Within the University of St. Andrews, I am co-director of the Institute of Behavioural and Neural Sciences (IBANS), a member of the Behavioural Neuroscience research group, and a research fellow within the Centre for Social Learning and Cognitive Evolution (SLACE).
