My research investigates the nesting behaviour of Hooded Crows (Corvus cornix) on the Orkney Isles of Scotland, as part of a BBSRC funded CASE partnership with Scottish & Southern Energy. Compared to the rest of Scotland, Hooded crows nest on electricity transmission structures in the Orkneys with exceptional frequency, resulting in supply interruption for customers and high costs for the suppliers. My PhD aims to investigate the factors that influence nest site choice, with the view of developing a non-invasive deterrent, while also attempting understand the role of cognition in nest building in general.
