From the land of snow and hockey that is played on ice and not a field, I have finally journeyed to St. Andrews to study the neural underpinnings and role of experience in nest building behaviour in birds. Under the supervision of Dr. Sue Healy, I am investigating patterns of activation in the brain associated with the act of nest construction. This approach will offer a new perspective into what sort of learning, cognition, and sensorimotor processing may be involved in this largely under-studied behaviour. Furthermore, nest building is a complex behaviour exhibited by a vast array of bird species that offers exciting venues for future comparative work in the brain and behaviour.
